RE: Hiking boots,your opinions......please?

Merrell and LL Bean are what we have been using for years. Ditto on LL Bean hikers. I have been using a pair for many years. I like the gore-tex, so I don't have to worry about stepping in streams or walking through wet vegetation. Also they come in EEEEwide, which I need. Joe

RE: Snow load

My own opinion is there is a higher risk of damage to the roof from removing snow than from it over loading your roof. Might be a good time to take a lesson from local RV Dealers and find out how often THEY remove snow from their stock. I agree with skipnchar, also the snow load per square foot or inch is never going to be as great as someone walking on the roof, which we all do. I have never heard of anyone having the roof damaged from snow load. I have, however, heard of crank-up roof vents breaking from snow load so I would make sure I have a Maxxair vent of them, or some type of wooden cover. Joe

RE: Replacing G rated tires with E rated

It had G rated tires on it for a reason. That would be a bad mistake to save a few bucks. The consequences could be much more. Ditto - "penny-wise and pound foolish" :S

RE: 5th Wheel Spirit Level

...The level point that I used as a reference, when I set it up was the refrigerator, since that is the reason I level the rig. Refrigerators aren't as sensitive as they once were. We level ours to the stovetop so we don't have grease running off the griddle or eggs all sliding to one side of the pan.

RE: Diesel Fuel Discount Card?

We use the no-fee Pentagon Federal Credit Union VISA (if you qualify to belong): https://www.penfed.org/ which rebates 5% on fuel, diesel and gas (purchased at the pump), 2% on groceries, and 1.25% on everything else. No cap on purchases. P.S. The interest rate is not great (13% or so), but we pay off every month so that so that is not a concern.

RE: King of the Road Fifth Wheel

Very good quality units, but as you noted, no longer in business. This may not be too great a problem as the unit would be out of warranty anyway and most of the appliances and systems are made by the same 3rd party manufacturers that make them for all the other RV companies.

RE: 5th Wheel Spirit Level

Thanks Dave. That's close but not exactly like the one I'm looking for. The ones I've seen have a vertical bracket on each side of the level that mounts onto the side of the pin-box with self tapping screws, using curved slotted holes for adjustment. http://www.campingworld.com/shopping/item/trailer-leveler/38102 If this is the one you are thinking about - save your money. :S They look great and I coveted one for many years, despite the bad reviews I read about them at Camping World and elsewhere. But, bad reviews notwithstanding, I found a new one for about half the regular price on eBay and got it. Well everyone was right. :( The first one had all the liquid leak out and when the company sent another new one, it never really worked to show the level of the rig. The ball moved too slowly and would not move to the same level point each time. I removed it after a couple trips and went back to the little black plastic levels which work, but don't look nearly as cool. ;)

RE: Leave hitch attached to camper, any problems.

I left mine ganging on the kingpin for the first time the other day. Put a padlock on the release handle which I normally do while towing anyway. My plan, when ready is to just spot it somewhere back in the truck bed, pull out and move it to the rails and reinstall the two pins with padlocks and the two without. Then hook up when I am ready to tow again. Chris Hi Chris, This is what I am saying too. It just isnt as easy as disconnecting. You dont want to drop it into your bed - at least not from too high - and once you are in your truck ready to pull the arm, you wont have enough hands to hold the hitch and pull the lever (you have to pull the lever to release it from the kingpin) - if you have someone else pull the lever it will help to avoid dropping the hitch. NO I do not plan on catching it. I will lower it into the bed close to the rails with the landing gear. Disconnect and pull out and set it in the rails by hand. Chris Absolutely, just set it down in the bed using the front landing gear motor. I can usually get mine less than an inch from the slots and then it is just a matter of moving each tab to the appropriate slot - thus requiring lifting only 25% of the weight of the hitch for a few seconds each.

RE: Leave hitch attached to camper, any problems.

This has been discussed before. There was a little debate, but the vast majority agreed that it was fine to just leave the hitch hanging from the kingpin. If that connection can handle towing, it can surely handle the static loads of hanging there. I would put a padlock on the hitch handle, so it can't be pulled off. Releasing that hitch while hanging there would be very dangerous. You'd probably be liable for injury, even if it was some kid just pulling a prank. Absolutely correct. Also locking the hitch handle should stop someone from from stealing the hitch (which happened to me).

RE: What tools did you decide to carry?

When I decided to stock tools in the RV, I used the list of tools that Camping World RV training courses require: http://www.cwrvi.com/tools.cfm

RE: Walking on Roof

I'm scared to walk on my roof as well, do'nt know how much weight it would take as I weigh in at around 245lbs.:E I weigh more than that and have never had a problem walking around on the roof to clean it or work on something that is up there - same goes for the slides.

RE: Replace locks on Alpenlite fifth wheel

There is little security in changing out the infamous CH751 keyed locks on RV storage compartment doors because anyone can pry one open with a screwdriver or similar tool in a couple of seconds. :S

RE: Tire Assistance Needed

I have had good luck with "Goodyear Wrangler HT" tires on my 5er... I, too, had good luck with my Wrangler HT's. They were OEM on my HitchHiker and just replaced them with the same. I would have put on Michelin XPS ribs as the consensus on these forums seems to be that they are the best tire for trailers/fifth wheels, however I could not bring myself to pay the extra $100 per tire it would have cost.

RE: Hoist for FIfth Wheel Hitch

I use the 5ver to lift the hitch out...to see if the weight could be left on the kinkpin and both said not a problem. I put a padlock on the release arm first so someone cant pull the lever and remove the hitch. Have done this for years - a lot easier (and cheaper) than buying and rigging hoists and carts. Also doesn't take up a bunch of space in your garage.

RE: Hello everyone..Looking for new 5ver advice..

Bro, There is a "consumer reports" for RV's. As I have in the past on this forum, I would urge you, or anyone else planning to buy an RV, to get a copy of the RV Consumer's Group ratings guide (CD). The will give you some objective information and ratings on the different models out there. Yes, the guide costs about $80, but that is pretty insignificant when you're going to spend $40,000+ on a fifth wheel. (You may be able to find the guide in some libraries). The RV Consumers Group website is: www.rv.org We have used the guide to purchase our last 3 RV's and found the ratings to be pretty accurate. The RV before we discovered the ratings was a piece of junk and we wish we had known about the guide then. (The guide accurately predicted it was poor in quality.) There are models out there that are better rated for the same money with the same features. Unless you're an expert on RV's (which we are not), think about it. You can do better than the 2 manufacturers you mention. Don't believe anything that RV salespeople tell you and only about half of what RV owners tell you about their rigs. They are not objective after having made a decision and sinking $35,000+ into their rigs. They want to believe they got the best. Good Luck! P.S. Thank you for your service to our Country.

RE: Best midwest Jayco dealer

When we bought our Jayco in 2002, the best price we found was at Willie's RV in Bloomer, WI. They've been there for years. When I was looking, Willie's was also the best deal I could find and the folks there were great. :) http://www.williesrv.com/

Southwind85 - just out of curiosity, did you try filling out the form and sending it in? Looks like the form is only for someone with an out-of-state address.

RE: Good Year Tires

My 2003 HitchHiker came with 235/85-16R Goodyear Wrangler HT's and I just replaced them, after 5 1/2 trouble-free years, with a new set of Wrangler HT's. Would have liked to put on Michelin XPS ribs, but couldn't justify the additional $100 per tire. Hope I won't regret that choice.

RE: Michelin Tires

My choice, I'd put LT's on both truck and trailer. Again, that's my choice. Lee Ditto!
